Build Types are labels used to trigger a build in a workflow. The main purpose of build types is to allow a workflow to build outputs without needing to know which configurators exist inside of the quote, instead simply instructing Epicor CPQ to build any configurator outputs belonging to the specified build type.
Build types are typically organized and labeled by function. For instance, you may have a build type for CAD outputs (parts & assemblies) which can be exported to drawings and other file formats. Another build type could be for end-user documentation such as safety data sheets and manuals in PDF format. Another build type could be for building a bill-of-materials in Excel.
Build types are individually executed by workflows and can and should be shared across multiple configurators.
Some build types may depend on other build types to be built before they can get built. To learn more, see workflows.
Related Terminology
Builds are a collection of output files that you want to automate when a user runs your configurator and adds it to a quote.
Outputs are files (such as a Word document or CAD drawing) created by placing the data found in a quote or configured product into a template file.
Exports are a way to export an output file to another file type.
Managing Build Types
To manage build types, open the administrative interface for your dev instance of Epicor CPQ. Then from the administrative menu select products > build types.
Here you can search/sort, select, add, clone, and delete build types:
If you click on a build type's name, it will allow you to edit it:
There is also an alternative way to create a build type: when adding a build to a configurator, instead of selecting an existing build type, you can create a new one by selecting "Add a New Build" at the bottom of the list.
